Mind, Music and Metaphors

On rainy days, my favorite thing to do besides pucker up & get kisses from my honey, is to put on some of my favorite tunes and just doodle. I never know what will come out of it when I start, but somehow my brain will focus on a certain verse or line in a song and it will entitle my pen to just make that lyric come to life, and by life I mean become a physical vision. Music is pretty much my lifelong friend, the truth behind all of my honesty & my inspiration for every step I take in life. So before this turns into a shitty Live Journal entry let me stop now and just post what the heck I’m blabbing about! These are from 2009. Pen and Marker over images manipulated in Photoshop.

Tomatoes & Radio Wire Illustration to Neutral Milk Hotel: Two-Headed Boy "Two-headed boy There's no reason to grieve, the world that you need is wrapped in gold silver sleeves, left beneath Christmas trees in the snow"
Sunken Treasure Illustration to Wilco: Sunken Treasure "But there is no sunken treasure, rumored to be. Wrapped inside my ribs in a sea black with ink."
Lovecraft in Brooklyn Illustration to Mountain Goats: Lovecraft In Brooklyn ""Someday somethings coming, From way out beyond the stars, To kill us while we stand here, It will store our brains in mason jars."

Boardwalk Empire Tribute Art

I am really sad that Season 2 of Boardwalk Empire has ended already! It seems like it went by too fast! But gosh, it was AMAZING! The more I thought about the show and it’s awesomeness, the more I convinced myself to do a painting in honor of the show I love so dear. I decided to go for an erie approach, much like the opening of the show should have been. I mixed my three favorite characters together ( Nucky Thompson, Jimmy Darmody & Richard Harrow)  in a ghostly setting on the Boardwalk of Atlantic City, NJ with their ghost spilling out of an old whiskey bottle.

Never forget Prohibition. How could you? No one was drinking. #badjoke

Hipster Art for my Hipster Hating Friends

So, I have this friend (who will remain nameless) that loves to come to Philadelphia just to “hipster watch.” Funny thing is, he does not realize that if another guy right next to him were doing the same thing, he would be asking my friend where he bought his Joy Division T-shirt or what his latest vinyl purchase was. For X-Mas, since he is a dear friend of mine, I decided to paint him some hipstermatic art that I know he will like. ( Hmm..I wonder why??) It was quite simple actually. I introduce to you…the Hipmulester!

Zombie Children

Around Halloween, every art show I went to was some kinda zombie-monster themed. I had no intentions really on painting zombies, I wanted to paint friendly, cute children, but given the surroundings I was forced to be around it warped my image of what cute children looked like. Behold my zombie children! Just acrylic on canvas.

Let’s not forget the little ones!

And no, this did not help at all with my fear of zombies. I thought it would make the word seem “cute” and I was wrong!

Personalized Illustrated Twitter Icons

As you know, almost everyone wants an interesting icon for their twitter-twatter page! I went on an addictive creative flight for a while a few months back turning my friends into personalized comic book style illustrations. The spark lasted a few-weeks and it was awesome. Basically I just doodled a sketch on a piece of paper, out-lined it with ink, scanned it into Adobe Photoshop, created a shit ton of layers and managed to poop out some colorful neat icons!

Beatles Beagles

Yes! Like every other hipster in Philadelphia, I absolutely adore the Beatles, but I did not do this one for me. A friend of mine has a dumb Beagle whom I love to death. His name is Toby (named after Toby from the office, and yes, the personality match is almost exact) Anyways, my friend is also a Beatles fan and commissioned me to paint for him a Beatles Beagles painting. I said, “Fuck Yes I Can Do That For You”

Inspired by these pictures I have in my living room:

Beatles Umbrella Photo

I came up with this painting (using all of Toby’s faces for each Beatle expression)

Beatles Beagles

I know this is a weird image of the painting, a better one to come once I remember to take a picture of it next time I am over my friends house! It’s been a hard days night and I’ve been working like a dog.

Giant Squid Attacking Whale-Sketch

I’ve not sketched with pencil in a long time before this. Then my buddy asked me to sketch his tattoo for him, a “giant squid attacking a whale” inspired by the band “They Might Be Giants.” I remember he asked me probably 6-years ago to do this but since sometimes my brain has – million things going on and disorganizes promises, it obviously never was done, until now. I must say I am really, really happy I did this finally because I had forgotten how much I love sketching and shading with pencil. It was a led-filled reckoning!

After this one someone else asked me to design their tattoo as well, so I did because I was super-addicted to doodling with pencil again! He asked for a Yoda with an “All Seeing Eye” and praying and he did receive!
